  • KREIL

Rick Kreil of Ponoka, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care on Sunday, July 11, 2021. Rick passed away at the age of 65 years, following a lengthy 42-year battle with multiple sclerosis. Rick was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on April 21, 1956. He worked in the automotive industry as a shop foreman and service manager for many years. Rick and his co-worker, Dave Sandin won the prestigious ‘Chrysler Troubleshooting Contest’ in the mid 80s, attesting to Rick’s prowess as a very competent mechanic! To this end, he was the service manager at Wilder’s Motors in Ponoka until his health no longer permitted him to work. Rick then resided at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care until his passing. Although Rick was diagnosed with MS when he was only 23 years old, he worked hard and fought a hard fight in his lifetime. In fact, up until the time he had to retire, Rick had received every service award that Chrysler could present him! For a quiet soul, he sure was a lot of fun! Rick was also a people pleaser, almost to a fault at times, as helping other people with their problems always came first before anything he wanted to do for himself. Rick was profoundly admired by his family and friends, and their cherished memories of him will live forever in their hearts. Rick will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his mother, Esther; and two sisters, Melody (Scott) Campbell of Crestomere; and Debbi (Wade) Raugust of Ponoka; in addition to his sister-in-law, Mabel Kreil of Rimbey and her family. He will also be greatly missed by numerous nieces and nephews, many cousins and additional family members, as well as several close friends and his ‘chosen siblings’, Charlie and Sharmayne. Rick was predeceased by his father, Rolly in 2013; an infant brother, Donald; and his older brother, Reg on July 3, 2021. Rick and Reg were always racing in life, but Reg won the race to heaven where he was waiting for a week for Rick to catch up. Rick also leaves behind two children, Mathew and Shannon. As Rick’s passing was expected and imminent, his life was also celebrated by family and friends at his brother, Reg’s memorial service held on Saturday, July 10, 2021. An additional service was not held. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Rick’s memory may be made directly to Hope Mission, 9908 – 106 Avenue, Box 953, Edmonton, Alberta T5J 2L8 (www.hopemission.com); or to the charity of one’s choice. • ADAM

Elizabeth “Betty” Annie Adam of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Area Three on Sunday, June 27, 2021 at the age of 81 years. Betty Adam (nee Sedak) was born and raised in Southern Manitoba where she grew up on a homestead and attended a single-room school. In her teen years, she moved into Winnipeg and entered the workforce. While only in her teens at this time, working in Winnipeg set the pace that Betty would follow for many years – a strong work ethic and stoic attitude towards life would be a legacy that she left behind for everybody who met her. From Winnipeg, Manitoba, Betty moved to Calgary, Alberta, and then on to Vancouver Island in 1970. There she would settle for a time to raise her family and work as a secretary at MacMillan Bloedel Lumber. The 1980s would find Betty back in Calgary facing the challenge of life as a single mom. She rose to the occasion, and quickly found work as a secretary with Social Services where she was an exemplary employee for over ten years. Even during this time, she continued to reach out to friends and family with Christmas dinners and wise words; leading a balanced life of work, dancing, and shopping. The late 80s found Betty transferring from Calgary Social Services to the Slave Lake District, where she pursued a life of fishing, work, dancing, friends, and family. In 1997 however, tragedy struck and Betty lost both her husband, Al Stone and her son, Robert. She retired from work and moved down to Rimbey where she stayed for the rest of her life. While in Rimbey, Betty met and married Leon Adam, a wonderful man who would stand with her and love her through the most difficult of years. Betty faced everything with a stoic attitude peppered with a sense of reality. She would say, “People tell you to get over things, but some things you don’t get over. Now, let’s go for a walk.” Life always had to go on. There was shopping to do, fish to catch, and work to be done. Betty was a source of strength that planted a seed in everyone that she met, and while she is gone to be with her son and loved ones, those seeds live on in each and every one of us whose lives she touched. Betty – mom – gran – grammy – sister – aunty … she will be greatly missed by Leon and all the family and friends who loved her. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Leon; her son, Don (Maryann) Friesen of Rimbey; and her daughter, Audrey (Darren) Attfield of Smith, Alberta; as well as nine cherished grandchildren: Logan, Tyler, Allison, Sarah, James, Dustin, Leon, Dakota, and Elizabeth; and two great grandchildren: Elliot and Marilyn. She will also be lovingly remembered by three sisters: Rose Judd of Teulon, Manitoba; Edna Massner of Gimli, Manitoba; and Dorothy (Gord) Oakford of Calgary; her first ex-husband, Ike (Diana) Friesen of Hamilton, Ontario; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and many friends. Betty was predeceased by her parents; two husbands, Walter Tishauser and Al Stone; her son, Robert; one brother, Mike; and two sisters, Jeanette and Stella. A Graveside Service in Celebration of Betty’s Life was held at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Jeremy Willment officiating. With great heartache we announced earlier this year the passing of Harry Vaughan Baker (Jr.) on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. He passed away suddenly at the age of 64 years, following the fast onset of cancer. Harry was born in Calgary and raised in the small hamlet of Exshaw, east of Canmore, Alberta. He spent many of his younger years helping manage motels in Stettler and Red Deer. Years later when his dad bought into the Grand Hotel in Rimbey, Harry came to help manage the bar. This is where he met and later married his best friend, Laura in 1987. Their family grew with the addition of three children: their first child, Kyle was born in 1990, Monique in 1994, and Randall in 1998. In 1990, Harry left the hotel industry and joined the United Association of Pipefitters-Steamfitters. When he retired from pipefitting years later, he joined his brothers, Mark and Arnold in their business in the oilfield. This involved sandblasting and painting tanks for oil companies, as well as LINE-X for truck boxes. In his spare time, Harry enjoyed watching golf and the hockey playoffs on TV. The most important thing to Harry was his family. He will be forever remembered and greatly missed. Harry is survived by his family: his loving wife of 33 years, Laura; and his children, Kyle Baker (Sarah) of Breton; Monique Baker (Tyson) of Calgary; and Randall Baker of Edmonton; as well as three cherished grandchildren: Payton, Daxon, and Knox; and his special four-legged companion, Jake. • ANDERSON

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Clarence M. Anderson of Rimbey, Alberta, formerly of Bentley, Alberta, who passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Area Three on Friday, May 21, 2021 at the age of 87 years. When we leave this world, we only leave behind memories and stories, and Clarence has left behind many. He was part of a large family, and was raised in the Bentley area for his childhood. After meeting his wife, Ruby, they made a home and built a life residing in the Rimbey area. Clarence had many adventures and journeys, and met countless individuals along the way. His interest in family history led him and his brother, Dennis to Sweden and Norway. Returning home, Clarence was more than enlightened by the experience - and this was only one of his many adventures! A man of many interests and talents, he had an absolute love for trapping and snaring, combined with a healthy respect for all wildlife. After joining the “Trapper’s Association”, Clarence gave 110% to all activities, as he also did with most of his other interests and projects. Crafty by nature, Clarence built birdhouses and willow chairs, and also welded with the best. He was self-taught to play the fiddle in his later years of life; and he always had a homemade batch of fruit leather, or a pocket full of sweets to share. He was also renowned for his ‘prim’ (the whey off the milk), and lutefisk! Clarence was an ambitious man who partook in rodeos, logged unimaginably huge trees, and owned and operated CMA Drilling and Blasting. He spent many of his working years in Yellowknife, Inuvik, the Crowsnest Pass area, and everywhere in between. Fondly remembered for his self-made “camp shack” at family reunions, his beard, his cowboy hats, many Toyota “Japcans”, “shanni soup”, and his unforgettable cheeky grin … Clarence will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Forever rest in peace, Papa. Love always … your wife, family, and dearest friends. xo Clarence will be forever remembered and sadly missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Ruby; his daughter, Della Anderson-Thebeau of Rimbey; his son-in-law, Gary Thebeau of Winfield; his stepson, Roger (Sylvia) Newman of Misty Valley, Alberta; and his stepdaughter, Karen (Randy) Cross of Rimbey; as well as many treasured grandchildren and great grandchildren. Clarence will be remembered fondly by four good friends: Lars, Dan, Gary, and Neil; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and many other additional relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Julia; one brother, Elwood; and his brother-in-law, Lorne Kangas. With respect for Clarence’s wishes, there was no formal funeral service. • HOWELLS

We are saddened to announce the passing of Iain Howells of Rimbey, Alberta. He passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at the age of 60 years. Iain was born in Sheffield, England on March 21, 1961. Following college, he owned his own pigs at the family home in Handsacre, England until his father passed away. This was his first adventure with pig farming. Iain then obtained his Class 1 truck driving license and embarked on a journey driving truck around most of Europe. He met his future wife, Joy in October of 1989. He had always known Joy’s family, as he went to school with her brother. Their daughter, Dani was born in 1992, and on September 6, 1997 their happy family of three was united in marriage. As Dani got older, Iain wanted to be home more so he returned to pig farming. In 1998 they relocated to Monikie, Scotland to continue farming, and then a move to Canada on April 20, 2005 brought them to pig farming at the Holtkamp Farm west of Rimbey. In 2007 Iain received his Class 1 driving license in Alberta. He found Canadian winter driving exciting … but in his later life, not so much! To most - Iain was a ‘grumpy old buggar’, but to those who knew him - he possessed a very dry sense of humour, and on occasion he was hilariously funny! Iain adored spending time with his family, who he loved very much. He will be forever missed. “History is in the hands of the writer; what he or she wants to embellish, change, or ultimately miss out. Completely changing the truth, and allowing over a period of time, to distort and twist memories of people that are passed down by tales or songs. These stories become Myth and Legend. This is one such story at a time when man was in great need of help. History became legend – legend became myth.” Iain Howells 2021 Iain will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend, Joy; and his daughter, Dani and her son, Declan of Rimbey. He will also be lovingly remembered by his mother, Maureen Howells of Scotland; and his sister, Fiona (Kev) Miller of England and their children, Vaughn and Charlotte; in addition to many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and close friends. Iain was predeceased by his father, Gregg; and one nephew. With respect for Iain’s wishes, no formal funeral service was held. • STUTHEIT

Edward Alvin Stutheit, but known to all as “Ted”, was the eldest son of Alvin Edward and Jean Cecilia Stutheit born in the Rimbey General Hospital on May 9, 1939. Ted passed away on April 6, 2021 at home with his wife by his side. Ted was raised on a farm west of Rimbey where he later returned to farm the land and keep it in the family, celebrating 100 years of Stutheit Farms. He started school at Potter Creek, a local country school, and later went to school in Rimbey. Ted continued his formal education at SAIT in Calgary and received his Journeyman Automotive Mechanic certificate, but he was a true jack-of-all-trades as he could weld, build, and create almost anything! If he could imagine it, he found a way to make it work. Ted worked hard his whole life, starting at a young age with his first job working for Wild Construction building homes and running a backhoe digging waterlines for the Town of Rimbey. Then he went to work in the oil patch being a “jug hustler” on the seismic line. In 1960 Ted married the love of his life, Joan Muddle, and they enjoyed over 60 years together raising a family that consisted of two boys, Dean and Brent, and one daughter, Holly. Over the years, Ted worked at several garages in Rimbey refining and perfecting his mechanical skills that would continue to serve him well for the rest of his life, as he was very adept at fixing heavy equipment and farm machinery. Anything under his management was always in top working condition. Ted owned a successful construction business, building and maintaining lease sites and roadways and even worked on a grazing reserve and the Dickson and Big Horn Dam sites for hydro power generation. Later in life, Ted was able to enjoy a complete from-the-ground-up restoration of a 1939 Chevrolet Business Coupe. Finally retiring on his beloved family farm in 2019, he never really retired as there was always something to fix, a ride along to haul grain, trees that needed to be cleared, or land that needed to be drained. Ted worked tirelessly to always gain optimal productivity of the land. Ted was very generous and thought the world of his family; he was so very proud of all his children’s and grandchildren’s achievements … he wore them like a badge of honour as he reveled in each accomplishment as if it was his own, as the kids were all a part of him. Ted is lovingly remembered and forever cherished by his beloved wife of 60 years, Joan Stutheit; his children, Dean (Phyllis) Stutheit, Holly Stutheit (Alfred Bold), and Brent (Glenda) Stutheit; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; his sister, Marilyn (Ray) Bosh; and many very special extended family members. Ted was predeceased by his parents, Jean and Alvin Stutheit; his brother, Jim Stutheit; his father- and mother-in-law, Spen and Ethel Muddle; brothers-in-law, James Evernden and Glenn Olson; and nephew, Brian Evernden. In keeping with the provincial gathering restrictions at the time, a private Family Funeral Service was held at the Rimbey Christian Reformed Church on Monday, April 12, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend David Holmes officiating. Interment followed in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. • MOTLEY

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Bruce Alan Motley at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at the age of 60 years, following a courageous and challenging seven-year fight with cancer. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Bruce is survived by Sherry, his loving wife of 31 years; and his children: the eldest, Kendra (Scott) Noble and their daughter, Evalin; and the youngest, Kaye Motley. He is also greatly remembered by his brothers: Barry (Tilly), Terry (Laurie), Lyle (Rose), Lorne (Suzanne); as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Muriel Motley. Bruce was born on September 3, 1960 in Didsbury, as the middle child of five boys. He was the family's natural athlete, twice awarded the top All-Around Athlete Honour at the high school in Carstairs. Those physical skills were honed on the farmstead outside of Acme, where he competed against his brothers for food on the dinner table and in various sports. Often rough, no-foul basketball classics were played on gravel in front of the hoop nailed to the garage, pitting two of the brothers against the other three. Bruce always led the team with the fewer players, yet he always won -- both on the scoreboard and in the bloody-nose tally. He went on to post-secondary, where he played basketball for the Red Deer College Kings. Bruce loved good people, good music, and good beer; he was a character. Upon arriving home from a high school dance quite late and full of cheer -- well beyond the rules on the farm -- his crack-of-dawn punishment was a prairie special: moving an entire stack of 500 greenfeed bales 20 feet directly west by hand. Years later, Bruce settled down, which can be fully credited to meeting the absolute love of his life, Sherry McCulloch. Following their marriage in 1989, along came the apples of his eye, Kendra and Kaye, who he loved immensely. Bruce and Sherry resided along the golf course in the community of Sunnyside at Gull Lake, where they graciously hosted many annual family gatherings with Chef Bruce always barbecuing a large side of beef. These gatherings also featured the children playing their parents in soccer, often rough-and-tumble affairs with a good dose of cheating to ensure parental supremacy. Bruce enjoyed life at the golf course, making many life-long friends and volunteering for the Junior Golf Foundation of Gull Lake. He often told stories of his golf trip with buddies to Ireland and Scotland, none of which can be printed here. Bruce enjoyed exploring the world, travelling with Sherry to the Canary Islands, England, Hawaii, and Mexico, among many other places. Music was a great love in his life, as he was often found blasting his classic favourites, both at home and on the road. This was highlighted by a trip with Sherry to Madison Square Garden in New York City to see one of his idols, Billy Joel. He was a true fan of all sports, cheering weekly for the Seattle Seahawks and somehow never getting frustrated with his Vancouver Canucks. Bruce also took pride in his job as a cable splicer and was known as a hard worker. He started with AGT, eventually working for Telus before launching his firm, Motley Communications Ltd., and working with a range of telecoms. Work led to endless travel, taking him to Oregon, Saskatchewan, and Ontario - not to mention Alberta from end to end, multiple times. We will all remember Bruce as a big family man who cared deeply for all, adoring the newest addition, his granddaughter, Evalin. With Sherry alongside, he was always a devoted father and offered an umbrella of support to Kendra and Kaye in all their ambitions every step of the way. Bruce was also the Motley family's fountain of knowledge, keeping track of all the brothers' children and extended family. He was loved dearly by all. The family is grateful to the doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff at the Central Alberta Cancer Centre and the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre for their compassion and wonderful care; you are the angels among us. They would like to thank Dr. Mairs, Dr. Hackett, and Dr. Lam for all their guidance and support. A Celebration of Life and a chance to say cheers to Bruce will be held at a later time. If friends desire, memorial tributes in honour of Bruce can be made to the Junior Golf Foundation of Gull Lake, Box 702, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (juniorgolffoundationofgulllake.ca); or to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre, c/o Alberta Cancer Foundation, 3942 - 50A Avenue, Bag 5030, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4E7 (www.albertacancer.ca). • LUND

With sadness we share the passing of Ty Lund on Sunday, February 28, 2021 at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care at the age of 82 years. Ty was born March 31, 1938 to Liz and Tom Lund of the Alhambra area. There are many things that Ty will always be remembered for. First and foremost was his strong personality and dedication to whatever he believed in. Ty was a very tough man both physically and mentally; very few people challenged Ty Lund and came out winning the argument. He had a true love for nature and being outdoors. Ty also had a strong sense of civic duty – he truly believed that he was put on earth to serve his fellow man. These aspects of Ty were evident at a very young age, and were evident throughout his career. As a toddler he simply could not stand being in the house, which was a problem for his mother, Liz who was busy running a farm household. All Ty wanted was to be outside all the time. The solution was to attach a bell to the back of 2-year-old Ty’s shirt and send him outside. All Liz had to do was open the door and listen for the ringing sound to know that he was okay. At the age of 6, he would walk approximately three-quarters of a mile to school, often accompanied by his 6-year-old cousin. There was also a frozen creek crossing along the way, and Ty and his cousin decided to travel along the ice in order to get home one afternoon. Unfortunately, the 6 year olds were not familiar with the dangers of beaver dams, and Ty fell through the ice into the freezing water. Fortunately, his cousin and other small schoolchildren were able to pull him out of the freezing water. A few years later, the Alhambra area was experiencing a cold snap. It was -40°C and Liz decided it was far too cold for Ty to walk to school. By the time his dad, Tom was finished with his chores, Ty was outside playing. Tom said, “If you can play outside, you can go to school. Get going!” Ty was made of tough stuff. As a teen, he loved the farm. Whether it was raising cattle, haying, or growing crops – Ty enjoyed it all. Although he did very well in school, it was always a hardship for him as he would rather be working on the farm. Once Ty was a young adult, he left the farm to work for his Uncle Fernie running a bulldozer. This was a time that had an impact on Ty, as he developed an even greater appreciation for the environment and especially the West Country. After spending a few years operating a bulldozer, he realized that he was needed on the farm and returned. During that time Ty took up curling, completed bulldozer work to help develop the Pine Hills Golf Course, was a Kinsmen member, and obtained his pilot license. It was also during this time that he developed a strong desire to serve his community. Ty began his political career as a councillor for the local Improvement District, which became the Municipal District of Clearwater, and Ty eventually became the Reeve. It was during this time that he recognized his true calling and embraced politics. In 1989, Ty was elected as an MLA for the Alberta Government and would serve for 23 years. It was truly his proudest accomplishment. Ty served as a cabinet minister under Ralph Klein, holding four different portfolios: Environmental Protection, Agriculture, Infrastructure and Transportation, and Government Services. These positions allowed him to travel the world as a delegate for Alberta, where he met with many government leaders. As a delegate, he helped to develop policies and agreements that benefited Alberta and other areas of the world. Ty attended the Kyoto Conference in Japan and multiple conferences with governors of the United States and Mexico. Some of the other notable places he visited were China, Russia, Argentina, and Germany. Ty returned to farming in 2012, but remained very interested in politics. When his mind and body would not allow him to be outside working, he would watch CPAC, the Provincial Legislature, and the Federal Legislature endlessly. One afternoon his brother, Mark went over to talk to Ty and noted that he was watching the British Legislature. Mark questioned why he was watching the British Legislature, to which Ty responded, “What am I supposed to watch when none of the legislatures in Canada are sitting at this time?” His dedication to politics and serving his community never faltered. Ty leaves to mourn: his siblings, Sharlene, and Mark (Wendy); his nieces, Christine, Shelda, Marcine, Clara, Hannah, and Taylor; his nephews, Theron, and Galan; his sister-in-law, Sonja; and dog, Molly. He was predeceased by his parents, Liz and Tom; brother, Curt; sister, Devera; brother-in-law, Orlen; and nephew, Colin. The Lund Family would like to thank the staff at the Rimbey Long Term Care Centre, and everyone who supported Ty during the last stage of his life. A virtual Memorial Service will take place at a later date. If friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the charity of one’s choice, or perform an act of service in your community in Ty’s memory. • CLOUGH

Beatrice May Clough of Rimbey, Alberta sadly passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, a few minutes past midnight on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at the age of 91 years. ‘Bea’, as she was known to everyone, was born on January 19, 1929 in Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up on her parent’s farm northeast of Saskatoon, near Brooksby. While growing up in Saskatchewan, the Salvation Army became an important part of her life. In 1948, Bea moved to B.C., along with most of her family, and ended up in Revelstoke. While there, she became friends with a woman named Florence Clough, who became very anxious for her to meet her grandson. Eventually she did, and they fell in love! Bea and Jesse Clough were married on September 14, 1949. She was still in her 20s when she lost her parents. Bea’s mother, Estelle Jones, passed away not long after the wedding, and her father, William Jones, about eight years later. Bea and Jesse raised their family in Revelstoke. She was an active member of the Moose Lodge and never missed a chance to go dancing. In 1972, the family moved to Alberta and began farming in the Rimbey area; where they stayed, were extremely happy in their new life, and made many, many friends. The couple left the farm and moved into the Parkland Manor in October, 2016. Jesse passed away soon after, and Bea remained at the manor. Bea’s family meant everything to her. She worked tirelessly and endlessly looking after her home, feeding the family, and making sure everyone had everything they needed or wanted. Her cooking skills were legendary. Many neighbours were only too happy to stop and help Jesse with whatever project he might be working on, at least in part for an opportunity to be fed at Bea’s table! In addition to a great deal of sewing and knitting, she enjoyed spending many winter hours, along with other ladies of the community, making quilts for the annual Gimlet Rodeo quilt raffle. Bea was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Jesse Clough on November 26, 2016 at the age of 89 years. Over the years, she lost all but two of her eleven siblings. Bea is survived by her three children: David Clough (Denise) of the Gimlet District; Judy Carlson (Lawrence) of Red Deer; and youngest son, Dwayne Clough, also of Red Deer; as well as four cherished grandsons: Luke Clough of Rimbey; Steven Clough (Trisha), also of Rimbey; Paul Carlson (Keri) of Edmonton; and Carl Carlson (Josie) of Red Deer; and four great grandchildren: Madalynn, Mallory, Zakkary, and Zoey. She is also survived by her eldest sister, Lil Degerness of Melfort, Saskatchewan (99 years old); and her youngest brother, Don Jones of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (81 years old); in addition to many nieces and nephews in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. “Bea will be very sadly missed by many.” Due to the government gathering restrictions at the time, no service was held. • KLUCZNY

Phyllis Rose Kluczny of Winfield, Alberta passed away suddenly at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital, Edmonton on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at the age of 85 years. Phyllis was born in Millet, Alberta on September 14, 1935, the eighth child of Arthur and Mary Cartier. The family later moved to Winfield, where she met the love of her life, Walter. They were married on November 4, 1952, and to this union seven children were born. Phyllis was a life-time farmer’s wife who enjoyed gardening, sewing, and spending time outside in nature. Not a minute did she waste - and that was her motto until the end. Phyllis was content with common sense, and she called it like she saw it. After Walter passed away in 2001, Phyllis had a sad place in her heart … but she learned that joy came back into her life through the people she loved, and those who loved her. Dancing was also something Phyllis really had a passion for. Both Phyllis and Walter were social people, so to endure these last few months of public health measures during COVID-19, Phyllis especially missed being with her dance friends. Her heartfelt concern for everyone’s well-being was felt by many, and her family and friends meant the absolute world to her. “Phyllis’ kind and generous ways will always be missed. She may be gone from our sight, but she will never be gone from our hearts.” Phyllis will be lovingly remembered by her children: David, Cathy (George) Ollenberger, Carol (Charles) Collisson, Michael, Brenda (Lyle) Swanson, Annette (Neil) Buschert, and Rita (Barry) Clarkson. She will also be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Michael, Christie, and Brennen Kluczny; Paul, and Devin (Tonni) Ollenberger, and Melaney (Shawn) Brownlee; Darryl and Shannon Collisson; Jordan and Madison Swanson; Michelle (Jerry) Haskell; Garrett and Dylan Buschert; and Austin and Emily Clarkson; as well as her great grandchildren: Benjamin and Lyra Ollenberger; Violet Fritz; and Lincoln, Cort, and Bowden Haskell. Phyllis will also be missed by her sister, Shirley (Don) Laczo; her sisters-in-law: Doris Kluczny, and Enid Cartier; her brother-in-law, Clarence Kluczny; in addition to many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and cherished friends. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Walter; and her siblings: Alfred (Clarice), Leo (Joan), Tom (Helen), Emile (Joyce), Agnes (Edward) Abbott, Wilfred, and Dan. A Private Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Ma-Me-O Beach, Alberta on Friday, December 4, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Father Sylvio Lacar, Celebrant. • BOYCE

Gwen Elizabeth Boyce (Jones) of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at the age of 74 years. Gwen was born on January 5, 1946 to Stan and Jessie Jones. She was raised in the Homeglen District and was well-cared for by both her parents and maternal grandparents, who happily lived in their home together. Although an only child, Gwen's life was filled with many cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, and neighbours. Gwen attended school in Sylvan Heights and Ponoka. She went on to attend college in Olds, graduating from the Secretarial Sciences program in 1965. Gwen, a dark-eyed, dark-haired beauty, began spending time with Pat Boyce at community dances and events, and eventually they were married in 1966. The couple resided in the Springdale area on the Boyce homestead and raised their three children, Shauna, Shannon, and Steven there. Gwen worked at the Bluffton School as a secretary, with Rimoka Housing as the financial officer, and at the Summer Village of Gull Lake as an administrator. She also partnered with Pat to run both the family farm and gravel company. Gwen retired from the Summer Village in 2007 when her parents required more care. With pride, she supported them as they aged and ensured their needs were met. Gwen took great pride in her children and grandchildren. Her grandkids held a special place in her heart. She was always available to chauffeur, babysit, or chat; and she rarely missed a game, a sale, or an event. Gwen played significant roles in all her children and grandchildren's lives, and saw each of them as individuals. She engaged in long chats on the phone with Sammy, loved hearing about Owen's next animal adventure, had political conversations with Ben, and enjoyed crafting and cooking with Jenna. Gwen was a firecracker, and if you needed her down-to-earth opinion, or her advocacy on a subject, she would give it, but not always on the same side of the argument as you hoped. She always welcomed friends and family to her kitchen table at the farm, or the couch at the condo. Gwen had a love for gardening, preserving, wood work, and was skilled in handicrafts, such as: leatherwork, painting, crocheting, sewing, and knitting. She was not always skilled at getting projects done in a timely manner. Gwen was active on many boards and had many volunteer positions in the community, including Victim Services and the Kansas Ridge Condo Board. She also loved sports, as a participant herself or a fan. Those closest to her knew not to try having a conversation with her if a Jays game or a bonspiel was on. Gwen was never one to sit idle; she was practical and straightforward when things needed to get done. She was an active member in many aspects of 4-H; from a member of home economics as a child, to supporting Pat in leading Light Horse 4-H, and as a leader herself of the Lavesta Sewing Club for many years. Gwen, of course, also supported her children and grandchildren in their 4-H experiences. Gwen will be greatly missed as a mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Shauna Boyce (Sam Paul) of Sturgeon County; Shannon Boyce-Campbell (Gerald Jennex) of the Homeglen District; and Steven (Teri) Boyce of the Springdale District; as well as four precious grandchildren: Sam, Owen, Ben, and Jenna; in addition to other relatives, and many close friends. Gwen was predeceased by her parents, Jessie in 2008 and Stan in 2009; and her husband, Pat in 1996. A special thank you to the Rimbey Hospital, Acute Care unit for the care that they provided to Gwen. In Celebration of Gwen’s uniqueness, and in appreciation for her favorite time of year, Halloween - Gwen’s family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, and acquaintances were invited to gather at the Rimbey Jr./Sr. High School parking lot on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. to take part in a Memorial Parade in Gwen’s Honour through the Kansas Ridge Estates condominiums. The Family wished to remind those who attended to please follow provincial health guidelines. Respecting Gwen's wishes, a private family gathering will take place at a later date. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Gwen’s Memory may be made directly to the Bluffton 4-H Beef Club, Box 1116, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0; or to the Rimbey Health Services Donations Program, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre - Acute Care, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhealthdonations.com). • SNAIR

Daniel ‘Dan’ J. Snair of Gull Lake, Alberta passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Monday, October 12, 2020 at the age of 54 years. Dan grew up in Springhill, Nova Scotia, and was the youngest of eight children. At the age of 19 years, he left Nova Scotia and travelled to Red Deer, Alberta to live with his brother, Paul. When he was 21 years old, Dan met the love of his life, Bonnie, and they were married in 1989. He spent the first 11 years in Alberta working at Michener Centre. Dan taught himself sign language so that he could work with the deaf in the group homes. As Michener Centre started to close many of their facilities, Dan decided it was time to try the oilfield industry. He spent the last 21 years of his oilfield career working with Trican Well Services. In 2001, Dan and Bonnie moved to Gull Lake and created a beautiful oasis to eventually retire at. His most favorite spot at home was sitting around the fire pit. Dan’s family was his world - he loved his sons, Josh and Jade, his grandson, Nicholas, and his wife, Bonnie immensely. He was the most kind and generous father, husband, friend, and son. Dan also possessed a tremendous sense of humor, and there wasn’t a day that went by without laughter. He loved to be by the water, either boating or challenging Jade and Bonnie in fish-catching competitions. As a creative woodworker, Dan took the greatest pleasure in making things for his family. He enjoyed puttering around in his garage; either woodworking, rebuilding his RC trucks, or bringing antique toys back to life. For the last 6 months, Dan fought a courageous battle against cancer. He will never be forgotten. Dan will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Bonnie; his two sons, Josh of Sooke, B.C.; and Jade (Lisa) of Blackfalds; as well as his precious grandson, Nicholas. He will also be lovingly remembered by his mother, Bessie Snair of Antigonish, Nova Scotia; and his brother, Brian of Truro, Nova Scotia; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and close friends. Dan was predeceased by his father, Gordon; and his six siblings: Mary, Wayne, Paul, Mike, Frank, and Shane. The family will hold an Informal Celebration of Dan’s Life in their backyard at Gull Lake in the summer of 2021. He was laid to rest in the Columbarium at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey at a later date. • SOUTAR

Our beloved husband, dad, papa, brother, and uncle, Daniel ‘Danny’ E. Soutar of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away peacefully, with his wife, Arlene by his side, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Friday, October 9, 2020 at the age of 62 years. He was a loving man who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Danny was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario on March 18, 1958, the second of four boys. He spent his childhood moving to and from mining towns, ending up in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he joined CP Rail. Upon moving to Red Deer years later, Danny continued working with CP Rail as a track maintainer in the Maintenance-of-Way Department. This is where he met Arlene, while she worked in the office. He came in once to use the photocopier, and caught her eye. After that, he would regularly stop to chat with her. For two years they saw each other at work, until finally Arlene took it upon herself to ask when he was taking her for supper! That’s all it took, and they were happily together for nearly thirty years! Danny was a family man who loved to cook for his family and friends, and was famous for his Caesar salad. He also loved to experiment with new ingredients to put a new spin on food. Danny always enjoyed listening to Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Def Leppard, and many more great artists while relaxing around the house, or doing chores. One of his favorite things to do on Friday nights was to have a wiener roast with family and friends in the back yard. He would always say to his friends, “Help yourself; if you can’t find it, we don’t have it”. Danny also loved to tease. When invited to supper, after serving what you believed to be a large meal, he would ask, “What’s for supper?” – then chuckle. Danny adored his son, Austin. He loved Austin shadowing him during house renovations, and sharing with him the basic skills of construction. Austin will always be thankful for the time his dad spent with him on these projects. Danny enjoyed watching Austin’s practices and many performances with the Red Deer Royals Marching Show Band. Danny first discovered his love of international travel when he and Arlene joined Austin with the Red Deer Royals on their competitive trip to Europe. After this trip, Danny and Arlene returned to Paris, England, and Scotland. While visiting any castle, palace, or famous landmark, Danny made a point of kissing Arlene. Not a man to show too much affection, he told her that this way she would have been kissed at the Louvre, Edinburgh Castle, and the Eiffel Tower, just to name a few. His grandson, Sawyer was Danny’s pride and joy. Papa saved every snack he found to give to Sawyer, and he was always spoiling him with little gifts and gadgets he found that he knew Sawyer would love. Danny enjoyed finding things to keep Sawyer entertained; from building forts in the living room, to blowing up water balloons in the back yard. Papa also loved to just sit and cuddle with Sawyer. Danny loved all of his nieces and nephews. When they came to visit, you would find them climbing all over him. Many would fall asleep in his lap. As they grew older, Danny made a point of giving them rides on the CP trains (along with any of their friends that tagged along). Many remember this as one of the coolest days of their childhood. Arlene comes from a large family, and whenever projects were being done, Danny would lend a hand. One time, digging more than 300 holes for a tree planting; and another time, shoveling all the cement mix into the mixer for a massive barn floor. The mixer couldn’t keep up with him, and Danny had to wait for it! In fact, years later, Austin was helping Auntie Dale and Uncle Wayne pour concrete for deck foundations. When Austin arrived on site, they joked that he would have to try his best to load the same mixer as fast as his father had all those year ago. Austin could almost match Danny’s legendary speed. Danny always went in, sleeves rolled up, ready to show everyone how it’s done - something he instilled proudly into his son. He will be lovingly remembered by all. xx Danny will be forever remembered by his wife, Arlene; and his son, Austin (Julie) of Red Deer; as well as his loving grandson, Sawyer. He will also be remembered by two brothers, Tom (Debbie) of Stonewall, Manitoba, and their family: Scott (Serina), and Tommy (Kitty); and Bill (Barb) of Calgary, and their family: Nika (Rob), Tasha, and Alex; his sister, Christine (Ian) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and their family: Tina (Mario), and Lucia (Steve); and his stepbrother, Al (Sherri) of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and their son, Cory. Danny is also survived by his six sisters-in-law, Melinda (Steve) and their family: Morgan, and Erinn (Jordie); Jacqueline; Lori and her daughter: Allison (Devan); Kathy (Gord) and their family: Megan (Garth), Wes (Kendra), and Maddy (Cody); Dale (Wayne) and their family: Cody (Cody), and Dustin (Janelle); and Suzanne (Bill) and their family: Jenny, Ashley (Braedy), and Cody (Sarah); in addition to numerous aunts, uncles, great nieces and nephews, and many friends. Danny was predeceased by his father, Tom; his mother, Connie; and a younger brother, Rusty. With respect for Danny’s wishes, no formal funeral service was held. At a later date, Danny was laid to rest in the Columbarium at the Alto Reste Cemetery, Red Deer. Al was united in marriage to Miriam (Baur) on November 2, 1957; and together they raised four daughters, four sons, and over 25 foster children throughout the years. While raising their family, they resided in Edmonton, Red Deer, and Blackfalds; later settling in Sylvan Lake. Al endeavoured to honour and serve God in all he did. His faith in Jesus was very important to him. He was an ambitious, caring, and fun man. He was also a hard worker who broke a lot of negative fatherly cycles, and we admired his fighter spirit. Al’s passion was to help others, and he did it well through many avenues. Together with Miriam, they loved to be involved in many church activities. Al held a special place in his heart for the youth, and enjoyed the role of Sunday School Superintendent, as well as his involvement with Scouts Canada. He would also organize rodeos for Michener Centre and for the church, and was helpful in many other organizations over the years. Al was known to invite others to join him on trips, even to Hawaii; and he would often take people out for a meal, or buy them an ice cream cone, just to simply brighten their day. Al and Miriam were also involved in many business ventures over the past 60 years, including: many construction projects, owning rental properties, Rim Rock Resort at Gull Lake, Lakewood Golf Course, the Lost Harbor Inn, and the Sylvan Lake Marina - where Al was very instrumental in getting the original light house constructed. For 13 years they also owned and operated Miss Mermaid Dinner Cruises, where he enjoyed being ‘Captain Al’. During their ‘retirement’ years, Al and Miriam spent 28 years in Juarez, Mexico with their charity, Operation Amigo. During that time, they built many orphanages, schools, and churches. They accomplished this feat by taking teams of workers from all around Canada, and physically working very hard themselves, often taking up to five trips per year to achieve their goals. Many lives were improved because of their generosity of time and money; and more importantly, their compassionate spirit. Mexico will never be the same. Al enjoyed entertaining and humour. He always had a quick joke, liked to tease, and he was also known for a prank or two (throwing the odd pie)! Al was also a great storyteller - sometimes his stories were true - and sometimes they were told with considerable embellishment! He liked to jokingly refer to himself as ‘the man of steel’. Al was not a perfect man, but God loved him perfectly. Al will be lovingly remembered by his God-fearing and loyal wife of almost 64 years, Miriam. They were a great team that worked together side-by-side. Al was the visionary, and Miriam was the detail person behind the scenes who wove it all together. He will also be forever remembered and greatly missed by his eight children: Sugar (Willy) Goertzen, Patti Brady, Wendy (Ray) Block, Perry (Cathy) Carruthers, Tim (Laurie) Carruthers, Darcy (Susan) Carruthers, Amelia Carruthers (Ron), and Roger (Lori) Carlson; in addition to twenty-three grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Al is additionally survived by his sisters: Alice, Ruth, and Donna; and his brother, Bill. He was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Audrey. “You were an incredible man - who left us with a strong legacy. Thank you. You have fought the good fight. You have finished the race.” Due to gathering restrictions at the time, a family-only Celebration of Life Funeral Service in Al’s Honour was held at the Bentley Community Church, Bentley on Friday, October 9, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Greg Rathjen officiating. Everyone was invited to join Al’s Celebration of Life online, (Meeting ID: 480 821 0835), by following the Zoom Link at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/4808210835 A private Interment Service preceded the Celebration of Life in the Bentley Cemetery, Bentley. Condolence messages may be forwarded to the family by visiting: www.ofc-ltd.ca Desiderata – Words for Life Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. - Max Ehrmann, 1927 Cremation Arrangements for the Late Lori E. McLeod-Hale entrusted to the care of
