BAKER
With great heartache we announced earlier this year the passing of Harry Vaughan Baker (Jr.) on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. He passed away suddenly at the age of 64 years, following the fast onset of cancer.
Harry was born in Calgary and raised in the small hamlet of Exshaw, east of Canmore, Alberta. He spent many of his younger years helping manage motels in Stettler and Red Deer. Years later when his dad bought into the Grand Hotel in Rimbey, Harry came to help manage the bar. This is where he met and later married his best friend, Laura in 1987. Their family grew with the addition of three children: their first child, Kyle was born in 1990, Monique in 1994, and Randall in 1998. In 1990, Harry left the hotel industry and joined the United Association of Pipefitters-Steamfitters. When he retired from pipefitting years later, he joined his brothers, Mark and Arnold in their business in the oilfield. This involved sandblasting and painting tanks for oil companies, as well as LINE-X for truck boxes. In his spare time, Harry enjoyed watching golf and the hockey playoffs on TV. He also loved helping his children in their sporting interests over the years, and took the greatest pleasure in taking them camping, golfing, and boating. The most important thing to Harry was his family. He will be forever remembered and greatly missed.
Harry is survived by his family: his loving wife of 33 years, Laura; and his children, Kyle Baker (Sarah) of Breton; Monique Baker (Tyson) of Calgary; and Randall Baker of Edmonton; as well as three cherished grandchildren: Payton, Daxon, and Knox; and his special four-legged companion, Jake. He is also survived by his stepmother, Paulette Baker of Red Deer; his sisters, Shirley (Frank) Hoffman of Vernon, B.C.; Linda Bradley of Red Deer; and Pauline (Ernie) Casselman of Dawson Creek, B.C.; and his brothers, Mark (Julie) Baker of Drayton Valley; Arnold (Caroline) Baker of Red Deer; and Ed Pothier of Calgary; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Harry was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Marge Baker; his in-laws, Vera Guldbrandsen, and Pat and Ruby Needham; and his brother-in-law, Bill Bradley.
To update family and friends, a Gathering to Celebrate Harry’s Life will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey on Friday, July 9, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Mark Schultz officiating. If desired, memorial tributes in Harry’s memory can be made directly to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre, c/o Alberta Cancer Foundation, 3942 - 50A Avenue, Bag 5030, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4E7 (www.albertacancer.ca); or to Rimbey FCSS, Box 404, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyfcss.com).
