HANCIK


With sadness it was announced earlier this year that Shirley Mae Hancik of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at the age of 88 years.


Shirley was born on November 6, 1934 in Lacombe, Alberta to Fred and Ruth Taylor, the fifth of nine children. She grew up near the Homeglen District and obtained her schooling in Crystal Springs and Rimbey. In 1952 Shirley was united in marriage to John Hancik. During their 44 years of marriage, they raised their family of five children in the Forshee District. Shirley was active in the Forshee Ladies Club for many years. She also helped to support the family over the years by working at the Rimbey Hospital, Alberta Registries, the Rimbey Gift Shoppe, as well as holding some cleaning contracts. After John passed away in 1997, Shirley moved into Rimbey. She then relocated to Red Deer in 2005, where she made many new friends at the old-time dances. In 2013 Shirley moved back to Rimbey, where she resided until her passing.


Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her five children Carleen and Jiun Shigematsu of Red Deer; Bob and Chiko Hancik of Lacombe; Dick and Marj Hancik of Rimbey; Connie and Mike Stang of Calgary; and Brenda and Phil Soderberg of Bluffton; as well as thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered by her brother Ron Taylor of Edmonton; her sister Phyllis Yassinsky of Calgary; three sisters-in-law Ann and Ivan Houghton of Rimbey; Teresa Taylor of Stony Plain; and Betty Taylor of Rimbey; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, John; her parents Fred and Ruth; four sisters Vernus Worman, Pat Jones, Mary Kelley, and Joy Koble; and two brothers John and Gale.


The Hancik Family would like to reiterate their heartfelt appreciation to the staff in Long Term Care at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. Thank you for the excellent care of our mom, and the amazing kindness you provided to her!


A Funeral Service in Shirley’s Honour was held at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Friday, May 12, 2023, at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Father Leon Kler officiating. Interment took place in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Bluffton.
