SCHEFFELMAIER

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, and brother Albert Harold Scheffelmaier of Rimbey, Alberta, formerly of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care on Monday, February 10, 2025, at the age of 96 years.

Albert was born at the Coronation Hospital on December 18, 1928, and was the first of ten children born to Adolf and Molly Scheffelmaier.  His early years were spent in Spondin, Alberta before the family moved to Battle Ridge, Alberta, where he began his education.  After completing school, Albert worked on his father’s farm and also spent summers working for Mr. Shacker.

In 1951 Albert married Gwendoline Cole, who lived just down the road.  Their wedding was special – it was the first held in the newly built Fairfield Baptist Church.  Together, Albert and Gwen raised three children Ken, Larry, and Connie.  As a family, they were active members of the church where Albert played many roles, including Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and, fondly, “the candy man” to all the children.

Albert was a man of many passions.  He loved the game of baseball, where he pitched and played third base for the Bonnie Doon Baseball Club.  He and Gwen also shared a love for curling, often participating in bonspiels together.  A dedicated grain farmer, Albert took great pride in his Purebred Simmental cattle.  He was among the first to import these cattle from Switzerland, and his success at cattle shows throughout the province was a testament to his hard work and expertise.  Yet, it was hunting that became his true passion – spending countless hours with his favourite people at Limestone Mountain, quadding and hunting.

In 2011 after more than 60 years of farming at Brownfield, Albert and Gwen retired to Sylvan Lake, where they quickly made new friends and enjoyed the simple pleasures of meeting for coffee.  They also joined the Sylvan Lake Seniors Club and became active members of the Alliance Community Church, where they cherished the fellowship of their new community.  When their health began to decline, they moved to long-term care in Rimbey, where they received exceptional care.  Albert, in particular, was pampered by all his special ladies.

Albert’s legacy lives on through his children Ken (Randi), Larry, and Connie (Dan); as well as his ten grandchildren Andrea (Kelly), Brett (Lisa), Jonathan, Rebekah (Charlie), Stephanie (Roland), Sasha (Eric), Julia (Matt), David (Anita), Cody (Alicia), and Brandon (Chantell).  He also leaves behind seventeen great-grandchildren Kendra, Kyle, Alexis, Brielle, Sophie, Keira, Ezra, Darius, Forest, Arwen, Willamina, Aries, Hunter, Blake, Keaton, Kaden, and Adley.

Albert is also survived by his sisters Helen, Esther, Shirley (Bill), and Linda (Leo); his sister-in-law Marie; and his brother-in-law Don; in addition to being cherished by numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Albert was predeceased by his parents Adolf and Molly; his beloved wife Gwen; son-in-law Hugh Symons; parents-in-law Glen and Hilda Cole; brothers Sam, Herb, and Richard Scheffelmaier; sisters Verna and Erv Altheim, and Jean Geddes; and brother-in-law Alvin Suchotzky.

Albert’s life was a reflection of his love for family, faith, and community.

His dedication to his family, his passions, and the countless lives he touched will remain in our hearts forever.

A Memorial Service in Celebration of Albert’s Life will be held at the Brownfield Baptist Church, Brownfield, Alberta on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with the Reverend Jim Rilling and Pastor Nathan Harris officiating.  Interment will precede the Service, at 11:00 a.m., in the Fairfield Cemetery, near Brownfield.

If desired, memorial donations in Albert’s memory may be made directly to the Brownfield Baptist Church, Box 28, Brownfield, Alberta  T0C 0R0 (www.brownfieldchurch.ca); or to the Fairfield Cemetery, c/o Hugh McLarty, Box 550, Coronation, Alberta  T0C 1C0.  Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page.
