STUART

With heavy hearts, we announce that Dorothy Gladys Stuart of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the age of 97 years.
Dorothy was born on July 6, 1927, at Fort Frances, Ontario. Her family moved west, and she grew up on a farm near Boyle, Alberta. In 1949, Dorothy moved to Spurfield, Alberta to work as a school-room correspondence supervisor. This was also the year she met and married her husband Charles Stuart. The following year, Dorothy and Charles undertook the adventure of moving north to Whitehorse, Yukon. Dorothy often shared experiences from her time in the Yukon, including stories about remote camping, incredible fishing, and the hands-on construction of their little, cherished home. Their son Randy was born in Whitehorse in 1958. As a result of work transfers, the Stuarts then moved south to Grande Prairie, and then to Calgary. Desiring to reconnect with a less urban setting, Dorothy and Charles saved up and purchased an acreage near Water Valley, Alberta that included an old homestead house which needed lots of love. They spent many weekends and holidays at the acreage, which is where their son learned the rewards of sweat equity. After Charles passed away in 1976, Dorothy worked for the City of Calgary at the museum, the zoo, and the planetarium.
Dorothy reconnected with her brother-in-law Leslie Stuart, whose spouse had also passed away, and they were married in 1982. Dorothy and Les lived in Calgary, Salmon Arm, B.C., and Ponoka where they grew award-winning gardens and enjoyed travelling in their motor home. When Les passed away in 2005, Dorothy moved to Lacombe, and then to Rimbey to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law.
Dorothy is survived and dearly missed by her son Randy (Gail) Stuart; her treasured grandchildren Crystal and Andrew; and her great-grandson Cal. She is also survived by her close and cherished friend Laura. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents John and Bertha (née Darbyson) Summers; her husbands Charles and Les; and her brother Roy Summers.
Her family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Ellis and all the staff who cared for Dorothy over the years, contributing in many ways with kindness and attention during her stay in Long Term Care.
Dorothy was very religious, but requested that no formal funeral service be held. She will be laid to rest at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, c/o the Rimbey Hospital Legacy Committee, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhospitallegacycommittee.com). Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page.
